I would start from question number 2 in the agenda, as we all have to understand the terminology. You all understand what is a temporary visa? Temporary, means that when it finishes you have to apply for a visa again.
Not many of you know though that there are three types of Essential Skills work visas in New Zealand exists from August 2017.
Low skills visa – hourly rate under $19.97
Medium skills visa – hourly rate from $19.97 to $35.24
High skills visa – hourly rate over $35.24
Maximum duration for Essential Skills work visa in lower-skilled employment is 3 years. After 3 years, lower-skilled workers will need to spend 12 consecutive months outside New Zealand before they can be granted a further Essential Skills visa to undertake lower-skilled work.
- Family members cannot be granted visas based on their relationship to an Essential Skills work visa holder who is undertaking lower-skilled work.

“Can I apply for a further visa if I am subject to a 12 month stand-down period?”
Yes. The 12 month stand-down only prevents you from being approved another Essential Skills work visas for lower-skilled work. If you are subject to a stand-down period you can still apply for another type of visa, or an Essential Skills work visa based on mid- or higher-skilled employment.
Now let’s talk about residence. Does everybody understand exactly this term?
As a resident you’ll be able to stay in New Zealand indefinitely and access most publicly funded services as free schooling and there are several temporary work visas that can lead you to Residence.
Talent Visas (Accredited Employer).
There are employers who are “accredited” by Immigration New Zealand as having recognised employment needs. When such an “accredited employer” selects skilled staff for a temporary assignment, their choice is normally supported by Immigration New Zealand.
Talent Visa (Arts, Culture and Sports).
Applicants may be considered for a Work Visa on the basis of their talent in the fields of Arts, Culture or Sport. High thresholds of talent or excellence are expected to be proved, as the result the policy is not often used.
Long Term Skill Shortage Workers.
Some people have skills in such short supply that they are eligible for temporary Work Visas leading them to residence after 2 years working (Electricians, electronic technicians, Diesel Mechanics, some engineers, etc.)
Religious organisations can apply for work visas leading to residence for religious workers (conditions apply).
If you are working right now on a low skills Essential Skills visas, you shall improve your skills so that you get to a higher hourly rate in order to apply for a medium skills visa next time.
